Hi Julia, I just came across your website... I am an Italian redhead, a very rare breed indeed. I have lots of stories about growing up with this strange color up my head. Kids used to tease me a lot..(they can be mean sometimes) In my country there are not many redheads and since Middle age they were considered devilish (i guess in rememberance of Barbarians who attacked the Roman Empire..) Popular tradition said that reds were children of the devil or witches.. They were also considered weaker than the rest of people and no good for work.. Im my language there are still many sayings against people with redhead.. I remember kids in school using them all with me.."you should not trust redheads cause they fake and manipulative" or "a redhaired pig is not good even to feed a dog"..A popular character in a novel by one of our greatest authors is named "Rosso Malpelo" meaning "Redhead Badseed" and described as capricious, evil and selfish..
When I was little I made up all kinds of stories to justify my being different..I imagined an alternative life so hard that I ended up believing it..I tought I was German, because for them it was ok to be fair coloured, from a real poor family that "sold" me to my Italian family to get me a chance at a better life. This would also explain why I am the only redhead in the family..
I started to sleep on the floor to be close to my German brothers that did not have a bed...
When I grew up I realized that I was indeed special, I stopped dying my hair to let my natural reddish colour stand out. I was made different by nature and finally I am proud of it :)
Just wanted to share a story about being a redhead where you should look like Sophia Loren

a number of other people I 'look just like':

the Duchess of York (no)
Wilma Flinstone (not even a real person)
Gillian Anderson in X-Files (don't mind that one)
young Shirley MacLaine (that one, is, admittedly, a bit true)

Thanks for all your good work Julia!

I love this website - Katherine, your comment made me laugh out loud! IN addition to the Wilma and Fergie, I also "look just like" Wendy from the hamburger chain, and Annie. And Pippi Longstocking.

I'll give people the Pippi, IF my hair is braided.

Love this blog! I will be back!

I wanted you to know that I just posted a post about your blog, linking to you of course, and used this picture of this stunning little redhead. I hope you don't mind... If there's any problem with that, please contact me. Thank you for those beautiful pictures!
